Winter 2025-2026

Winter is generally a quiet time around the pond. Hopefully everyone has prepared their ponds for the winter by deep cleaning leaves, plant debris and fall muck. Ponds that are at least three feet in depth should not freeze in the Greater Charlotte area. Aerators and circulation pumps should remain on, but waterfalls  are usually turned off. The pond keeper should have a thermometer to check the temperature the pond regularly. As the water temperature drops, feeding of koi should be limited. Most guideline recommend not feeding koi when the water temperature is under 50°.  Some koi food can be fed in water temperatures as low as 40°, check the packaging instructions carefully. At lower temperatures, koi will have a decreased metabolism and enter torpor. Torpor is not hibernation but a conservation of resources. Koi will move very little and internal processes (including digestion) are slowed significantly.
